Motorists urged to take extra care as snow, rain and poor visibility affect travel
Motorists travelling through KwaZulu-Natal are being urged to exercise extreme caution as severe winter weather continues to affect parts of the province.
Snow has been reported in parts of the KZN Midlands and surrounding high-lying areas, while rain, icy conditions and poor visibility are creating difficult driving conditions. Despite the adverse weather, the N3 highway remains open, although motorists are being advised to allow additional travel time and drive according to the conditions.
The difficult conditions are not limited to the higher-lying areas. Durban and the surrounding coastal region are also experiencing cold, wet weather, with motorists warned that steady rain and reduced visibility can make driving more hazardous.
Drivers urged to slow down
Wet or icy roads can significantly reduce tyre grip and increase stopping distances. Drivers should reduce their speed, increase their following distance and avoid sudden braking or steering movements.
Motorists are also encouraged to switch on their headlights when visibility is poor and to remain alert for pedestrians and other vehicles.
Check conditions before travelling
Road conditions can change quickly during severe weather. Motorists travelling between Durban, Pietermaritzburg and the inland areas should check the latest traffic and road information before starting their journey.
Current reports also indicate lane restrictions and roadworks on sections of the N3 around Durban and Pietermaritzburg, which may contribute to delays.
