Motorists urged to slow down, increase following distances and stay alert
Durban motorists are facing difficult driving conditions today as persistent rain and cold weather affect parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The wet conditions are creating reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces, while heavy rainfall in and around the eThekwini area could increase the risk of waterlogged roads and localised flooding. Strong winds along the coast are also adding to the challenging conditions.
For drivers, today’s weather is a reminder that road safety is not only about how well you drive in good conditions — it is also about how you adapt when conditions change.
Slow down and give yourself more time
Wet roads can reduce tyre grip and make it harder to stop safely. Drivers should reduce their speed, avoid sudden braking and leave more space between their vehicle and the one ahead.
Visibility can also deteriorate quickly during periods of heavy rain. Headlights should be used when necessary, and motorists should remain particularly alert for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles and vehicles that may be difficult to see through the spray.
Watch for standing water
Water accumulating on roads can conceal potholes, damaged surfaces and other hazards. Drivers should avoid entering areas where water appears too deep to cross safely.
Where flooding is present, the safest decision may be to find an alternative route rather than taking a risk.
The journey home could be challenging
Today’s conditions are particularly important for motorists travelling during busy periods. Traffic volumes, poor visibility, wet roads and standing water can combine to make an ordinary journey considerably more demanding.
Motorists travelling between Durban and inland areas should also remain aware that conditions can change significantly along the route. The N3 and surrounding Midlands areas are experiencing particularly cold and wet conditions, while some higher-lying areas face additional weather-related hazards.
