A new road project in the Hluhluwe area of KwaZulu-Natal is set to improve access for seven rural communities that have struggled with poor road infrastructure for many years.
Contractors have been appointed to begin construction of the Skhwakwanani–Ngwenya Road, with the project expected to connect communities including eNyathini, Bhojabhoja and Makhombana. The announcement was welcomed by residents and local officials during a community gathering at kwaMakhasa over the weekend.
For residents in these communities, better roads mean more than simply making travelling easier. Poor road access can affect people’s ability to reach schools, workplaces, shops and essential services. It can also make it more difficult for emergency services to reach people when they need assistance.

Road infrastructure plays an important role in creating safer and more connected communities.
Well-maintained roads can improve access, reduce some of the challenges faced by motorists and pedestrians, and make it easier for emergency services to respond when incidents occur.
