The Department of Transport reported that 6,457 people died on South African roads between 1 January and 23 August 2026, a 9% reduction compared with the same period in 2025. However, pedestrians accounted for 48% of those fatalities, making pedestrian safety a major issue. KwaZulu-Natal was also among the provinces that achieved at least a 10% reduction in fatalities.
